Swallows are small birds with dark, glossy-blue backs, red throats, pale underparts and long tail streamers. They are extremely agile in flight and spend most of their time on the wing. They are widespread breeding birds in the Northern Hemisphere, migrating south in winter.

In modern times, swallows are typically associated with spring and summer — especially in China. The swallow's migration and re-appearance often coincides with winter's end. The birds usher in a brighter, more colorful season. For that reason, these birds are symbols of good luck or positive change.

Do swallows return to the same place every year?

Each year, about 44 percent of all barn swallows will return to nest in the same area they nested the previous year. If the birds decide to renovate their old nest, they begin by throwing out and replacing old nesting material and adding more mud around the nest's rim.

Why are swallows late this year 2022?

There are two reasons for the lateness of the swallows and martins. Unlike many other migrants, which fatten themselves up before they depart, these species feed as they travel, replenishing lost energy by catching flying insects. For that reason, they are especially vulnerable to bad weather en route.

If you find a swift, swallow or house martin on the ground, you should get them looked at by a professional to find out the cause. Place them in a secure cardboard box with ventilation holes and line them with a towel or newspaper. Once they're safe, call a wildlife rehabilitator for the best course of action.

Are swallows intelligent?

Swallows are very smart at finding mates, finding insect food to feed on, building mud nests, finding their way to the sample place to breed year after year, and the list goes on, but they can't do arithmetic!
